Proper Kosher Standards and How Premier Event Catering Is A Master Of Detail

Choosing to use kosher catering services is a great choice for your next event, whether it’s a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, wedding, bris/baby naming, or any other special occasion. Hiring a catering company that understands the importance of following proper kosher standards is essential to complying with these dietary standards for traditional Jewish law.

Premier Event Catering has more than 34 years of experience in the industry, as we offer both on-premise and off-premise kosher catering services. Our business is Kosher Certified under ORB (Orthodox Rabbinical Board), and our head chef is a Culinary Institute of America Graduate. Taking care of the small details while serving delicious food and drinks is our top priority!

What Are Proper Kosher Standards?

Kosher is a term that describes food that is prepared and served in accordance with Jewish dietary laws. These rules provide a framework on which foods are allowed or forbidden while also showing how specific foods need to be prepared before consumption. A kosher catering company will follow all of the details of these rules to ensure the food meets these strict standards.

There are three primary kosher food categories, which include meat, dairy, and pareve. Meat includes mammals or birds, while dairy consists of milk, butter, cheese, and yogurt. Pareve (neutral) is any food that isn’t meat or dairy, such as eggs, fish, and plant-based foods. Kosher tradition prohibits any type of meat to be eaten or served during the same meal with a dairy product. Additionally, all of the utensils or equipment used to process and clean meat and dairy need to be separate.

How Meat Products Need to Be Prepared

Working with a kosher food catering service is key to properly preparing the meat for guests at an event. Ruminant animals with split hooves are considered kosher, such as sheep, goats, cows, lambs, and deer. This meat must also come from the forequarters of these ruminant animals. A shochet is a person specifically trained to butcher these animals while following Jewish laws. Additionally, the meat needs to be soaked to remove any traces of blood before it’s cooked. All of the different utensils used during this process need to be kosher and only used for these meat products.

Kosher Standards for Dairy Products

Dairy products, such as milk, cheese, butter, and yogurt are permitted under kosher standards, but they must follow specific rules. For example, these dairy products must be from a kosher animal, and they can’t mix with any meat-based derivatives. Dairy products also need to be prepared with kosher equipment and utensils that haven’t been used for processing meat-based products. A kosher catering service company will follow all of these guidelines for preparing dairy products for your event.

Additional Things to Consider

Fish and eggs are classified as neutral due to them not having milk or meat products. A fish needs to have fins and scales to be kosher, such as halibut, mackerel, salmon, and tuna. Any water-dwelling animals that don’t have these features are prohibited, whether it’s crab, lobster, oysters, shrimp, and any other kinds of shellfish. Fish also doesn’t require any separate utensils for preparation, and they can be eaten with either meat or dairy products. Eggs from kosher fish or birds are permitted if they don’t have any traces of blood, as each egg needs to be individually inspected.

Kosher Standards for Plant-Based Foods

Plant-based foods are also considered neutral and can be eaten with other types of food. A kosher food catering company will also follow specific guidelines for plant-based foods, such as not using any bread that contains animal-based shortening or oils. Fresh fruits and vegetables are considered kosher as long as they aren’t produced with non-kosher equipment.
